Psychoeducation: understanding ADHD

Understanding what ADHD is, and what it means for you, is the basis of your treatment. In psychoeducation you learn how ADHD affects your life. Your partner or family are welcome to join.

What psychoeducation is

Psychoeducation literally means: explanation about a mental health condition. Your practitioner explains ADHD to you, and together you recognise how it plays out in your life.

Many people look back on their lives differently after the diagnosis. Things you always attributed to yourself now have an explanation. That understanding helps you make choices that suit you, and is also the basis for the other parts of your treatment.

Topics you can discuss

  • What ADHD is, and what it is not.
  • How ADHD shows itself in your case: at home, at work or during your studies, and in relationships.
  • Your strengths and what you struggle with.
  • What the treatment options are, with and without medication.
  • How you can explain to the people around you what ADHD means for you.

Your partner or family are welcome

ADHD plays a role not only in your own life, but also in the lives of the people around you. That is why your partner or family members are welcome at psychoeducation. This helps them understand better what ADHD means for you too.
